(Annisa) 4 : 141

Those who are waiting and watching about you, if you have a victory from Lord Allah, they say: "Weren’t we with you?" and if the disbelievers have a portion of success, they will say them: "Even though we had a chance upon you for success, didn’t we prevent you from the believers?" And Allah will judge between you on the Day of Judgment, and Allah has never made any way of triumph for the disbelievers upon the believers.

The character of hypocrites during Messenger's time is prescribed in these verses. Publically they were claiming that they are believers, but by mind they were disbelievers. Even though when the battles happened between believers and disbelievers, the hypocrites were keeping neutral without joining with either of the two as explained in verses 4: 89-90. They were wishing the defeat of the believers and thereby the destruction of Islam.

Today there is no group of believers anywhere in the world, and so there is no battle or killing. The odd believer should tell to the hypocrites and to those who have a diseased heart the words which penetrate their inner hearts as explained in verse 4: 63. The believer is also commanded to do great Jihad with Adhikr against the Arabic Quran reading Fujjar. It is told in verse 25: 52: "You don’t obey the disbelievers, and you do great Jihad against them with Adhikr". The believer should follow a lifestyle beneficial for the thousand communities of the Lord's creatures as explained in verses 2: 62 and 7: 205-206. See explanation 2: 113; 4: 88-89 and 3: 159-160.
